Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced plans to limit gambling inducements, a move that is part of ongoing negotiations with Opposition Leader Angus Taylor to advance gambling advertising legislation. The leaders met in Canberra on Monday to discuss the deal, following recent revelations concerning illegal drugs, sex workers, and alcohol allegedly provided to high-spending gamblers.
Speaking to Labor's caucus on Monday afternoon, Mr Albanese promised limits on inducements and new, unspecified rules for gambling advertising. He stated that the legislation, which is intended to be the strongest anti-gambling law Australia has seen, would be presented to the House of Representatives later this week with practical amendments.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that the government is seeking agreement with the Coalition on plans to reduce spending in the National Disability Insurance Scheme and on the news bargaining incentive. A deal on the gambling legislation is anticipated to be finalised as soon as Tuesday's Coalition joint party room meeting.
