The Victorian Liberals have committed to restoring weekly general rubbish collections if they are successful in the state election scheduled for November. Jess Wilson, the party leader, described the current fortnightly system in her local area as “disgusting”.
Wilson stated that if elected, a Liberal-National government would mandate councils to collect general rubbish weekly. She added that waste charges would be subject to the council rate cap, which limits annual rate increases to inflation, ensuring households do not incur additional costs due to the change.
Currently, 33 Victorian councils have switched from weekly to fortnightly general rubbish collections. Councils that have made this change often cite the introduction of weekly food organics and garden organics (Fogo) collection as the primary reason, aiming to encourage residents to compost food scraps and reduce landfill waste.
