Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has secured his place in the fourth round of the US Open, overcoming China's Yibing Wu with a 6-3 6-4 6-1 victory. The Spaniard's win on Friday extends his match-winning streak at major tournaments to 17.

Alcaraz, who is reportedly recovering from a nearly five-month wrist injury layoff that caused him to miss the French Open, Wimbledon, and the American hard-court swing, remains among the tournament favourites. He broke Wu's serve early in the match, though Wu did manage to break back in the first set.

The 23-year-old Spaniard quickly regained his advantage, breaking Wu's serve again to secure the first set. He continued to dominate, winning five consecutive games after being broken in the first set and closing out the second set after Wu had briefly levelled.

In the third set, Alcaraz saved two break points before pulling away. He sealed the match with an ace after Wu missed a volley while Alcaraz was serving for a place in the fourth round. Alcaraz is now set to face 20th seed Tommy Paul, who advanced after a five-set match against Alexander Bublik.

Earlier in New York, 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev also progressed, beating 26th seed Arthur Rinderknech 6-4 6-4 6-4. Medvedev, the seventh seed, will play either Frances Tiafoe or Valentin Vacherot in the fourth round.
