Seven-time major champion Carlos Alcaraz has spoken about the mental challenge of dealing with "intrusive thoughts" during his extended absence from tennis due to a wrist injury. The 23-year-old Spaniard, who has not played a singles match since mid-April, described the uncertainty of his return date as the most difficult part of his recovery.
Alcaraz is preparing to make his comeback at the US Open in New York, which starts on Sunday. He will begin his title defence against Roman Safiullin, a match that is expected to test his lack of recent competitive action.
Despite the lay-off, Alcaraz stated on Friday that he feels "great" and mentally ready to compete in five-set matches at the highest level. He has been dealing with tenosynovitis, an inflammation of the tendon sheath in his wrist, and continues to wear a compression sleeve on his playing arm.
The world number two, who won the US Open in 2022 and 2025, played in a mixed doubles event earlier this week alongside Serena Williams. He will be seeded second at the tournament.
