  • Carlos Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik won their doubles match 6-4, 6-4.
  • This was Alcaraz's second competitive appearance since a right wrist injury sidelined him from April to August.
  • Team Europe holds a 3-1 lead over Team World on the opening day of the Laver Cup.

Carlos Alcaraz returned to competitive tennis at the Laver Cup, securing a 6-4, 6-4 doubles victory with Jakub Mensik against Alexander Bublik and Taylor Fritz. This marks Alcaraz's second competitive appearance since being sidelined for four and a half months due to a right wrist injury, from April until August.

On the opening day of the Laver Cup, Team Europe established an early 3-1 lead over Team World. Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, also offered tactical advice to teammates during matches, including suggesting Casper Ruud attempt more down-the-line backhands and drop shots.

Alcaraz expressed his desire to find his form and perform well in upcoming tournaments, noting that the latter part of the season has not historically been his strongest. He stated, "I know that I have really important tournaments ahead of me, tournaments that I really want to win at least once, and if we see the record for me, the last part of the season it’s never been my good point."

Why this matters: Alcaraz's return to competitive play after a significant injury layoff could impact his performance in the remaining tournaments of the season, particularly as he aims to conquer the indoor swing.
