Alex Hynes has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the DfT Operator, the government body responsible for running LNER, Northern, and Southeastern train services across Britain's railways.
The seasoned railway executive brings considerable experience to the role, having most recently served as Managing Director of Scotland's Railway. In this position, he oversaw both Network Rail Scotland and ScotRail operations, managing infrastructure and train services across the entire Scottish network whilst working to improve performance and passenger experience.
Before his Scottish leadership role, Mr Hynes held senior positions at several train operating companies, including Managing Director of Northern and Managing Director of London Midland. This background gives him comprehensive insight into the challenges facing both regional and intercity rail services across the UK.
The DfT Operator was established by the Department for Transport to directly manage rail franchises following the collapse of the previous franchising model. It serves as an interim measure, providing continuity and strategic oversight for services brought under direct government control.
His appointment comes at a critical time as the government moves towards creating Great British Railways (GBR), the new public body designed to simplify the fragmented railway structure. GBR aims to integrate track and train operations whilst putting passengers at the heart of the network, with responsibility for setting fares, timetables, and ticket sales alongside infrastructure management.
Mr Hynes's leadership will be crucial in maintaining service reliability across current operations whilst preparing the groundwork for Britain's transition to the integrated railway system under GBR.
