Alex Milward has been appointed His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for North America and His Majesty’s Consul General to New York. He is scheduled to take up the position in August 2026.

Milward brings more than 30 years of experience from the private and public sectors, including digital, energy, defence, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and professional services. His most recent role was head of the UK’s Carbon Capture programme at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

He will be supported by Deputy Trade Commissioner Alan Gogbashian and Deputy Consul General Mel Lawrence. Milward replaces Oliver Christian MVO, who has served as HM Trade Commissioner for North America since April 2025.

Milward stated he is honoured by the appointment and looks forward to building on strong foundations, supporting UK companies, and attracting investment. The UK and US recently concluded an Economic Prosperity Deal, and the UK's accession to CPTPP is creating new opportunities with Canada.

Why this matters: The appointment comes at an important time for the UK’s relationship with North America, following an Economic Prosperity Deal with the US and new opportunities with Canada through CPTPP.
