  • The club announced a pre-tax loss of just under £3m in April.

A consortium featuring former AC Milan, Chelsea, and Brazil forward Alexandre Pato is reportedly set to acquire a majority stake in League Two club Northampton Town. Pato, 36, who retired from playing last year, is understood to be involved with the group, though not fronting it.

This development follows Northampton chairman Kelvin Thomas's confirmation last month that a "well-funded" group's proposed investment had been "pretty much agreed." Thomas had previously stated that the investment would make the club debt-free, after the Cobblers announced a pre-tax loss of just under £3m in April.

The consortium, Sports Alpha Capital, had earlier this year been in discussions to take over Colchester United but pulled out after initial talks. Northampton, who were relegated to the fourth tier last season, have since appointed Chris Hogg as manager in May and brought in seven new players.
