Heavy thunderstorms threaten to bring flash flooding across central and southern England today, with the Met Office issuing an amber warning as downpours of up to 60mm could hit within hours.
The warning covers parts of England and Wales, including Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol, and London, where forecasters predict 30-40mm of rain could fall within a single hour. Some isolated areas face the prospect of 60mm over just a few hours.
This intense rainfall creates significant flash flooding risks, particularly in urban areas and low-lying ground where homes and businesses could face serious disruption. The amber classification signals a high likelihood of severe impacts including treacherous driving conditions, extended journey times, and power cuts.
Yellow thunderstorm warnings remain active across broader areas of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, indicating less severe but still disruptive weather conditions for millions more residents.
Temperatures will stay relatively mild, ranging from 17°C in northern Scotland to 23°C in southern England. Wind speeds are forecast to remain light at 5-15 mph, though stronger gusts may accompany the most intense downpours.
The Met Office urges the public to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, warning that even shallow depths pose serious dangers. Residents should secure loose garden furniture and delay non-essential journeys where possible, seeking alternative routes around flooded roads.
Regular updates from the Met Office and local authorities are strongly advised as conditions develop throughout the day.
