The Met Office's latest alert paints a bleak picture for parts of Wales: heavy rain is set to bring disruption and potentially devastating floods. An amber weather warning has been issued for north Wales, mid-Wales, and the south Wales valleys from 10pm on Friday to 11am on Monday.
Residents in these areas are being urged to take precautions as forecasters predict totals of over 60mm of rainfall by the end of the weekend. This is not just a matter for outdoor enthusiasts: those commuting or planning to travel should also be aware that transport links are likely to be severely disrupted, with several rivers already issuing flood warnings.
The Met Office has advised residents to check their flood risk and sign up for flood alerts on its website, as well as offering guidance on staying safe during heavy rain. This includes heeding the warning not to walk or drive through floodwater – a potentially deadly mistake that can have devastating consequences.
Wales is currently the only region under an amber weather warning; England's north-west has a yellow warning for rain, while Scotland and Northern Ireland are bracing themselves for strong winds and heavy rain respectively.
