Heavy snow is battering parts of the UK today as the Met Office extends amber warnings for Scotland and Northern Ireland while issuing fresh yellow alerts across northern England and Wales, threatening widespread disruption into the weekend.
The amber warning remains in force until Saturday morning, with Scotland's higher ground expected to see 10-20cm of snow and isolated areas potentially hit by up to 30cm. Strong winds are creating blizzard conditions, whilst Northern Ireland faces similar accumulations, particularly in Antrim and Londonderry where travel is already proving treacherous.
Yellow warnings for snow and ice now blanket a much wider area, stretching across northern England, the Midlands and parts of Wales through Saturday. Even where snowfall is lighter, widespread icy patches on untreated surfaces pose significant risks following periods of snow and sleet.
Temperatures are set to plummet, with daytime highs struggling to reach 2-3°C in affected areas and overnight lows dropping to -5°C or below in rural spots. Much of the UK will see temperatures at or below freezing, whilst wind speeds could hit 30-40mph in exposed areas, creating dangerous drifting snow.
The brutal conditions are expected to cause major travel chaos across road, rail and air networks. There's a real risk of power cuts, with some rural communities potentially becoming cut off temporarily. Motorists face severe delays, whilst public transport cancellations are likely.
