American Airlines has launched its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which entered commercial service today, 2 September 2026, on a route from New York to Buenos Aires. This move is part of a broader strategy by US carriers to attract higher-spending travellers.
The updated layout on the 777-300ERs will feature 144 premium seats, an increase from the current 116, raising the overall proportion of premium seating to about 44% from 38%. The new configuration includes 70 Flagship Suite business-class seats with privacy doors, 44 Premium Economy seats, and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats offering additional legroom.
As part of the overhaul, American Airlines is eliminating its Flagship First international cabin. Sales for travel in this class will cease for journeys beginning 19 November. American was the last of the major US network carriers to offer a separate international first-class cabin.
All 20 of American's 777-300ER aircraft are scheduled to undergo these upgrades, with completion slated for 2027. These planes operate on key long-haul routes including London, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Sydney. Updated aircraft will also offer enhanced inflight entertainment, and AAdvantage loyalty program members will receive free high-speed Wi-Fi access.
