Amputee asked for more proof for Blue Badge renewal by council

Nigel Ward, a 71-year-old amputee from King's Lynn, has been asked by Norfolk County Council to provide further evidence for his Blue Badge application, despite submitting photos of his missing leg.

  • Nigel Ward, 71, an amputee, has been asked for more proof for his Blue Badge renewal by Norfolk County Council.
  • Norfolk County Council stated there is no renewal process and applicants must provide evidence of ongoing eligibility with each application.
  • Mr Ward previously obtained a Blue Badge three years ago and said the process was simpler then.

A 71-year-old amputee from King's Lynn has been asked by Norfolk County Council to provide further evidence for his Blue Badge application, despite submitting photographs showing his missing leg.

Nigel Ward, who lost his leg three years ago, said he was "very disheartened" by the request. A council worker reportedly suggested that amputees can run marathons, a level of physical endurance Mr Ward states he does not possess.

Norfolk County Council stated it is following correct procedures, explaining that there is no renewal process and all applicants must provide evidence of ongoing eligibility with each application. This applies even to those with permanent disabilities.

A spokesperson for the council said that applicants must adequately evidence difficulties experienced while walking, and that evidence can include letters, reports, or details of treatment from a medical professional.

Mr Ward said he cannot provide medical evidence of limited mobility as he no longer attends consultations after receiving his prosthetic limb. He added that he is now considered independent and would only need medical assistance if there was an issue with his prosthetic limb or stump.

Mr Ward, who successfully applied for a Blue Badge three years ago, said the previous process was relatively simple. He believes increased scrutiny of genuine applicants may be due to fraudulent claims, noting that Norfolk County Council has taken dozens of people to court for misusing Blue Badges.
