Amsterdam is currently hosting WorldPride 2026, an event that commemorates 25 years since the Netherlands became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage. This legalisation was marked by marriages officiated by Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen on 1 April 2001.
The city's acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community is evident, with Progress Pride flags displayed widely. Cultural events are part of the celebration, including the 'Queer Stories' collection at the Rijksmuseum and the 'Queer Amsterdam: the Pink City' exhibition at The Nieuwe Kerk. This exhibition, which opened in July 2026, is set to remain open until April 2027 and is intended to pave the way for a dedicated LGBTQ+ museum.
The Canal Parade, a traditional highlight of Amsterdam Pride, has been enhanced for WorldPride 2026 with the construction of the WorldPride Stadium on the Prinsengracht, providing nearly 10,000 seats for spectators. Nightlife also plays a significant role, with queer venues concentrated around Reguliersdwarsstraat.
Artis Amsterdam zoo is offering an educational experience on sexual diversity in the animal kingdom. Additionally, the Pulitzer Amsterdam is hosting Jasper Abels' 'Velvet Scars – A Kingdom of Courage' exhibition until 9 August.
