Amy Hunt has secured her second gold medal at the Birmingham 2026 European Championships, winning the 200m with a European lead time of 22.19. This victory completes a brilliant sprint double for the 24-year-old, following her 100m gold earlier in the championships.
Compatriot Dina Asher-Smith, who last achieved a sprint double at this competition eight years ago, earned a bronze medal in the 200m. This result marks her ninth European medal, placing her one shy of the all-time record. Hunt had previously defeated Asher-Smith in the 100m at these Championships and retained her national 100m title against her in June.
Hunt expressed the physical challenge of the 200m, stating, "The 100 is the hardest mentally and the 200 is the hardest physically." She also mentioned experiencing low blood pressure and fainting after some 200m races this year. Asher-Smith acknowledged her disappointment with bronze but highlighted the achievement of consistently competing at a high level for 10 years.
Elsewhere, Keely Hodgkinson advanced to the 800m final after winning her semi-final in 1:57.38. Her main rival, Audrey Werro, who fell in the opening semi-final, was reinstated for the final. Scot Jemma Reekie also progressed in the 800m, while Mark English secured Ireland's first individual men's gold at the championships in the 800m.
