  • Andoni Iraola, who led Bournemouth to their highest-ever finish of sixth, has been appointed as the new manager.
  • Liverpool spent a record £450m on signings last season, with an outlay of nearly £550m in 15 months, yet the squad is considered unfinished.

Andoni Iraola has taken the helm at Liverpool after Arne Slot was sacked following a season that saw the club finish fifth in the Premier League. This marked Liverpool's lowest points tally in 14 years and their most defeats in all competitions for 33 years.

Iraola arrives from Bournemouth, where he finished unbeaten in 18 Premier League games and guided the club to their highest-ever finish of sixth. His appointment follows Slot's departure, which occurred on the day of the Champions League final, a surprise to the Dutchman himself.

Despite Liverpool's record spending of £450m on signings last season, with a total outlay of nearly £550m in 15 months, the squad is described as unfinished. Key issues include the departure of Mohamed Salah, whose successor has not yet been found, and defensive injuries, with Conor Bradley expected to be out until November.

New defensive additions include Jeremy Jacquet, a £55m signing from Rennes, and Ronald Araujo, on loan from Barcelona. Jeff Bezos, part of the 1892 consortium taking a minority share in the club, has not altered the transfer budget.

Why this matters: The change in management and ongoing squad issues could impact Liverpool's performance in the upcoming season, following a significant dip in form.
