Former Liverpool and Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has revealed he was sexually assaulted by a man who was later jailed. The incident, detailed in his autobiography 'Owning It', occurred at his home in 2021, hours after he had played a match for Newcastle.
Carroll wrote that a friend of his ex-wife, Billi Mucklow, invited himself to their house to watch a boxing match. After a few drinks, Carroll went to bed, later waking to find the man attempting to perform oral sex on him. Carroll then threw the attacker out of the house, punching him unconscious when he tried to re-enter, before calling the police.
The attacker denied sexual assault but was found guilty of sexual offences after a trial where Carroll testified. He was sentenced to three years in prison, placed on the Sex Offender Register, and banned from entering Carroll's village. Carroll stated that the trauma of the event has not gone away, making it difficult to focus on football.
The 37-year-old, who now co-owns and plays for National League South club Dagenham and Redbridge, included the attack in his book at the last minute after discussing it with his girlfriend, Lou Teasdale. He expressed hope that sharing his story might help others.
