Welsh cricketer Aneurin Donald is preparing for a significant moment in his career as he is set to open the batting for England in Cardiff today, Thursday, 17 September. The 29-year-old made his international debut two days ago, on Tuesday, 15 September, in England's 119-run T20 victory against Sri Lanka in Southampton, where he scored 12 runs from five balls.

Donald, who came through the Glamorgan ranks, will be the first player from the club to represent England since Simon Jones in 2005. He expressed his anticipation for the occasion, stating that "Getting an international cap on Welsh soil would one of the most special moments in my career."

His selection to open the batting follows an injury to fellow Welshman Phil Salt, with Jos Buttler as his partner. Donald has been rewarded for his strong form with Derbyshire in the T20 Blast and Trent Rockets in The Hundred, having overcome serious knee injuries in 2019 and 2020.

Why this matters: This marks a significant milestone for Welsh cricket, with a Glamorgan-represented player returning to the England squad after a considerable period.
