Progressive Angie Nixon has secured the Democratic nomination for the US Senate in Florida, triumphing over former army intelligence officer Alexander Vindman in the primary election. Nixon, a state representative and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, will now challenge Republican Ashley Moody in the November general election.
Nixon's victory represents an upset for the Democratic establishment, particularly given the disparity in campaign funding. At the end of July, Nixon's campaign had $975,000, significantly less than Vindman's $16.3m, according to Florida Politics.
Moody, who was selected by DeSantis to replace Marco Rubio when he became secretary of state last year, won a primary election to run for the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.
