Byron Donalds, a congressman representing south-west Florida since 2021, has won the Republican primary to become the party's candidate in the race to succeed Ron DeSantis as the state's governor. Donalds, who was endorsed by Donald Trump, secured the nomination by defeating three other Republican rivals, including Jay Collins, who was DeSantis's handpicked lieutenant governor.
Donalds' campaign website states he is "committed to implementing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Great Again." He made affordability, reducing property taxes, and insurance costs central to his campaign.
David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who switched parties, secured the Democratic party’s nomination on Tuesday. Jolly faces Donalds in the November election. No Democrat has won a Florida governor’s election since 1994.
