AI company Anthropic has observed notable changes in its workforce and work processes over the past year, according to a report published on Friday. The company is making fewer junior hires, with the proportion of junior-level employees in technical departments decreasing from 21% to 14% since early 2025. The proportion of junior technical hires saw an even sharper decline, from 27% to 9%.
Technical teams now constitute a smaller share of Anthropic's overall workforce, falling from 61% to 56%. This trend is attributed to the natural expansion of business functions as the company scales, alongside coding tools increasingly enabling non-technical employees to create software.
The report also indicates an increase in meeting time, with meeting time per employee up 20% compared to a year ago, and 16% for technical contributors. Anthropic attributes this to the importance of "human trust and accountability," with employees reportedly describing "face-to-face coordination as indispensable."
Anthropic suggests that "human attention and judgement" are becoming a "bottleneck" for productivity, as its AI, Claude, produces a "deluge" of text requiring review and organisation. Despite this, the company argues that AI adoption has made it more productive, citing "more code per person, closing more sales per rep, and processing more contracts."
