Apple reportedly partnering with LG on smart home devices

Apple is reportedly working with LG on a smart lock, thermostat and doorbell, alongside a smart home hub expected to launch on 13 October.

  • Bloomberg reported that Apple is partnering with LG on smart home devices including a smart lock, thermostat and doorbell.
  • The devices are designed to integrate with an upcoming Apple smart home hub expected to launch on 13 October with a 6-inch square display.
  • The LG-branded devices are expected to be announced, if not formally released, next week.

Apple is working on a new ecosystem of smart home devices through a partnership with LG, according to a Bloomberg report. The devices include a smart lock, a thermostat and a doorbell.

The products are designed to integrate with Apple's smart home hub, another upcoming product reportedly set to launch on 13 October. That hub is expected to feature a 6-inch square display that can be placed on a countertop or mounted on a wall.

The two companies are also reportedly working on a slate of security cameras, including indoor, outdoor and floodlight models. The LG devices are expected to be announced, if not formally released, next week. TechCrunch said it had reached out to Apple for more information.

The devices will reportedly carry the LG brand despite being developed by both companies. The reported move could be read as a challenge to Amazon's smart home offerings, which include Ring home security cameras.

Why this matters: The reported partnership would mark a further push by Apple into the smart home market, where Amazon already offers a range of similar products.
