Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been handed a 10-match ban by Fifa's disciplinary committee for his involvement in on-field altercations after Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Paredes will also pay a fine of $90,000 (£66,000).
His teammate Nahuel Molina has been suspended for seven matches and fined $90,000 (£66,000). Spain midfielder Gavi and Argentina's Thiago Almada will each serve a one-match suspension and pay a $30,000 (£22,000) fine for their roles in the post-match confrontations. Roberto Ayala, a member of Argentina's coaching staff, received a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine.
The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has been fined $321,000 (£235,000) for breaches including team misconduct and discriminatory chants. Fifa has ordered the AFA to invest $100,000 (£73,000) of the fine into a plan to combat discrimination. Argentina will also play their next two home matches with 50% stadium capacity, with one match of that sanction suspended.
Fifa appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor last month to investigate the incidents at the New York New Jersey Stadium after the final whistle, which involved multiple Argentina players and backroom staff in altercations with Spain players. Additionally, several Argentina players displayed a banner claiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after their semi-final victory against England.
