Arizona State hockey player Matthew Mayich remains in hospital nearly two weeks after collapsing during an offseason workout on 20 August. The 21-year-old defenseman's condition is highly unlikely to change, according to attorney Rob Carey, who is representing Mayich's family.
The collapse occurred during an outdoor practice on the opening day of the fall 2026 semester, the earliest date NCAA rules permit formal hockey team activities. Carey described the workout as "onerous" and "grueling," suggesting it was unsuited for a first outdoor session, particularly for athletes new to the area.
Carey claims there were signs of trouble before Mayich collapsed, noting the workout lasted over an hour with limited rest and only one water break for some participants. Arizona State has stated that coaches and trainers were present and plans to conduct a comprehensive review of the facts.
The attorney has called for an independent investigation, the placement of those involved on administrative leave, and details regarding the workout's authorisation and planning. Mayich, a St. Louis Blues draft pick, was set to begin his first year with Arizona State after transferring from Clarkson University.
