Irish painter Seánie Harte has documented the 11 red cards received by former Manchester United and Ireland footballer Roy Keane during his time at the club. Harte's 'Red Card' series features colour-filled oil pastel paintings, done in a loose, figurative style, which often depict acts of aggression or their aftermath.
Harte was inspired by Keane's blunt and humorous recounting of his red cards on the 'Stick to Football' podcast. Each painting in the series is paired with a one-liner from Keane himself, such as "Gareth deserved that. Gareth lunged at me," referring to his 1995 sending off for stamping on Gareth Southgate.
The paintings were initially posted on Instagram, and prints are sold online. Harte's exhibition, 'Sent Off: Paintings of Every Roy Keane Red Card', will open at the Hen’s Teeth space in Dublin on 3 September.
