Asda has been found to deliver the freshest groceries in a new investigation, with perishable items having an average of 11 days remaining until their use-by date. This contrasts with Waitrose, which delivered the least fresh groceries, averaging just 7.7 days.
The investigation involved 12 mystery shoppers ordering 29 fresh groceries from six major supermarkets over two weeks. Morrisons and Ocado followed Asda, with groceries lasting an average of 10.4 days, while Sainsbury's averaged 10.2 days.
The survey also highlighted that 16% of 519 online supermarket delivery customers reported receiving perishable items with a very short shelf life as their top frustration. Some items were delivered on their use-by or best-before date, including a substituted raspberry trifle from Morrisons with less than four hours left until expiry.
Why this matters: Consumers may be paying more for groceries that do not last as long, potentially leading to increased food waste.
What this means for you: The freshness of your online grocery delivery could vary significantly depending on the supermarket, impacting how long your food lasts and potentially leading to more food waste if items have short shelf lives.
