Asfoora's Retirement on Hold After King George Stakes Performance

Popular sprinter Asfoora's retirement plans are on hold after she finished fourth in the King George Stakes at Goodwood, with a potential return to York next month.

  • Seven-year-old mare Asfoora finished a close fourth in the King George Stakes on Friday.
  • Her trainer, Henry Dwyer, is considering a return to the Nunthorpe Stakes at York next month.
  • Asfoora was previously expected to retire and enter quarantine next week before returning to Australia.

Asfoora, a seven-year-old mare, may postpone her retirement after a strong performance in the King George Stakes at Goodwood on Friday. The popular sprinter finished a close fourth behind American Affair, despite expectations that this would be her final race before heading to Australia for breeding.

Trainer Henry Dwyer indicated that a return to the Nunthorpe Stakes at York next month is a possibility, stating, "The door is ajar." The decision ultimately rests with Asfoora's owner, Akram El-Fahkri.

Asfoora has previously won the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2024, and both the Nunthorpe Stakes and the Prix de l’Abbaye last year. She was due to enter quarantine next week.

Earlier on Friday's card, Talk Of New York, the 2-5 favourite, was defeated by Shayem in the Thoroughbred Stakes.
