Aston Villa suffer historic first-half collapse against Brighton

Aston Villa endured one of their worst Premier League opening 45 minutes, going 4-0 down and having a player sent off against Brighton, following a summer of significant player departures.

  • Aston Villa were 4-0 down at half-time against Brighton, with new signing Joao Gomes sent off on his debut.
  • The club has seen four key players depart, including Morgan Rogers for a record £117m, and two more first-team stars were omitted from the matchday squad.
  • Manager Unai Emery gave a 'Silence' response when asked about Ollie Watkins' omission, amid speculation of a move to Al-Hilal.

Aston Villa experienced a calamitous start to their Premier League season, collapsing to a 4-0 deficit against Brighton within the first 45 minutes. The match saw a new-look Villa side concede an own goal from Victor Lindelof within eight minutes, followed by goals from Maxim De Cuyper and a quickfire double from Jack Hinshelwood.

The situation worsened for Villa when new £38m signing Joao Gomes received a straight red card for kicking out at Georginio Rutter on his Premier League debut. This came after Hinshelwood scored his second goal just 80 seconds after his first, following Gomes being caught in possession.

The poor start follows a summer of significant player upheaval for the Europa League winners. Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne, and Ezri Konsa have all departed, with Rogers fetching a record £117m fee from Chelsea. Speculation is also mounting over the futures of Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez, both of whom were left out of the squad for the Brighton match.

When questioned about Watkins' omission, manager Unai Emery responded with a lengthy pause before stating, "Silence." Emery had previously confirmed that bids had been made for the England international, who is reportedly wanted by Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.

Why this matters: The significant player departures and poor start to the season suggest a period of considerable uncertainty for Aston Villa, despite recouping large transfer fees.
