Central Europe experienced record-breaking heat last week, with Wieselburg in Austria reaching a new July peak of 40.3C. This temperature is 0.2C below Austria's all-time high, which was set in August 2003.
In contrast, Vancouver recorded its wettest July since 2016, with 33.6mm of rain, slightly above its 1991-2020 climate average.
Elsewhere, Typhoon Dolphin, which was previously a Category 5 tropical cyclone, has been downgraded to a Category 3 storm. It currently has sustained wind speeds of 125mph and is continuing westwards towards Okinawa, Japan.
The typhoon is forecast to weaken further before making landfall as a Category 1 or 2 storm. However, wind speeds of 80-100mph are still expected to affect the archipelago, potentially causing widespread damage and disruption. As Dolphin approaches land, its wind field is forecast to expand, shifting the primary threat from destructive winds to storm surge.
