The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set to go ahead on Saturday, 26 September 2026, marking 10 years since its inaugural Formula One race. This year's event is taking place on a Saturday because Sunday is a national holiday, Remembrance Day.
The Baku City Circuit, hosting the race, is approximately 105 miles from Azerbaijan's southern border with Iran. While regional conflict has led to the cancellation of other motorsport events, this fixture remains on the F1 calendar.
The World Rally Championship recently scrapped its season-ending event in Saudi Arabia due to travel concerns from teams. Similarly, the World Endurance Championship cancelled races in Bahrain and Qatar in July, replacing them with European venues. Azerbaijan has reportedly been less directly affected by the Iran war compared to Gulf nations, many of which host major US military bases and were targeted by Iranian strikes.
In the championship, Kimi Antonelli commands an 81-point lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell. Antonelli's lead is more than double the biggest advantage Oscar Piastri had last year, and he is coming off back-to-back wins.
