  • Over 60 overs were lost across the first three days of the South Africa-Australia Test due to bad light.
  • The ICC recently amended playing conditions to allow the pink ball to be used throughout a Test if teams agree beforehand, but this was not done for the Durban Test.
  • Former South Africa bowler Shaun Pollock believes there is a "stigma" around the pink ball, while former bowler Vernon Philander suggested umpires should enforce its use in poor light.

More than 60 overs have been lost from the first Test between South Africa and Australia in Durban due to bad light, despite a recent change to cricket's rules. Play was halted early on all three days of the match, which is being played at Kingsmead.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently amended its playing conditions to allow the pink ball to be used throughout a Test if problems with light are expected and teams agree before the match. However, no such agreement was made between South Africa and Australia for the Durban Test.

Former South Africa bowler Shaun Pollock, who was part of the ICC committee recommending the change, suggested there is a "stigma" surrounding the pink ball. He noted that if the pink ball had been used, an additional 45 overs of Test cricket could have been played.

Another former South Africa bowler, Vernon Philander, expressed a preference for umpires to enforce the use of the pink ball when light fades, rather than leaving the decision to the teams.
