Thousands of residents in Bangkok awoke in shelters on Sunday following days of heavy rain that caused extensive flooding across the Thai capital. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported that nearly 4,900 people have been evacuated, with around 52,000 households impacted by the floods.
More than 330mm of rain was recorded in some city areas between Thursday and Sunday, according to the weather agency. This heavy rainfall led to a disaster declaration across the capital.
Water levels in Bangkok's canal network remained high on Sunday morning, with authorities working to accelerate drainage efforts. Further rain was forecast for Bangkok and its surrounding provinces throughout Sunday, though it is expected to taper off on Monday.
Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt advised residents via a Facebook post to avoid unnecessary travel due to several roads still being flooded. The BMA also announced that hundreds of city schools will be closed on Monday.
