Visitors to Barlinnie prison in Glasgow have been unable to use the toilets as work continues to resolve water supply issues at Scotland's largest jail. Some inmates in two halls at Barlinnie first experienced problems on Thursday night and initially had no access to bottled water.
On Friday, the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) stated that the issue was proving difficult to fully resolve. The problems have continued into the weekend, with one woman supporting a prisoner reporting that laundry had not been done since before Thursday and prisoners had not been allowed showers.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson confirmed they are continuing to work with Scottish Water to resolve the issues. Scottish Water stated that there are no issues affecting their network in the area, indicating the matter relates to an internal issue within HMP Barlinnie.
Prisoners were reportedly given two-litre bottles of water after initially receiving flavoured water. Concerns were also raised about communication with prisoners and the inability for visitors, especially those with children, to use facilities.
