Shawn Fain has been re-elected as president of the United Auto Workers (UAW) for a four-year term, following a campaign period that included accusations of corruption and election interference. Fain secured over 68% of the vote, with his closest opponent, Rich Boyer, receiving just over 13%.
The union's leadership election commenced with mail-in ballots sent out in late August 2026, and vote tabulating started on 6 October. Fain's slate, United UAW, saw an additional 13 candidates win their respective elections.
In July 2026, the Department of Justice announced an investigation into Fain regarding allegations he pressured another union official to provide benefits and then retaliated when the official refused. Fain denied these allegations, characterising them as an attempt to interfere with the election.
Fain stated, "The membership has spoken. UAW members are united and want us to keep fighting and building on what we’ve done." He highlighted upcoming contract negotiations at John Deere, Volvo, and General Dynamics Land Systems in 2027, and the expiration of contracts with the big three automakers in May 2028.
