Staff at the BBC have warned that morale has been severely dented by a gradual process of announcing plans to shed as many as 2,000 employees over several weeks. The corporation aims to save £500m through these cuts.
More internal meetings are scheduled for this week to discuss further details of the planned reductions. Some staff reportedly fear that additional waves of cuts could follow in the new year.
As part of the savings programme, BBC Scotland and BBC Three are expected to be made online-only channels. Sweeping redundancy plans have been announced across various divisions, including news, local radio, and the media tech division, where 110 compulsory redundancies are planned out of 280 roles closing.
The BBC is undertaking these cuts due to significant financial challenges, with cash revenues reportedly falling at an alarming rate over the last year. Director General Matt Brittin stated he was not fully aware of these pressures when he took the job.
