Firefighters in Greater Manchester are tackling major moorland fires at Dove Stone and Swineshaw, while also dealing with smaller fires started by campers. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has warned that preventable fires are diverting resources away from the ongoing response and putting pressure on emergency services.
The GMFRS has advised visitors to outdoor areas to act responsibly, not to light BBQs, fires, or fireworks, and to dispose of rubbish correctly. They have also urged people to report any deliberate fire-setting to FireStoppers anonymously.
Crews in the multi-agency response have been working in difficult conditions to bring the fires under control, with additional firebreaks being created and helicopter support providing water drops and aerial surveys. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has advised residents to avoid areas affected by smoke from the wildfire and to stay indoors with doors and windows closed if smoke is visible.
The GMFRS has warned that starting a fire could result in a fine or prison sentence or both. They have also recommended that people living in rural areas or areas prone to grass or wildfires check their property and surroundings for fire hazards and manage vegetation to reduce the risk of a fire spreading to their property.
