Be Vigilant: Five Scams Targeting UK Consumers

Warning signs for five scams, including bank account hacking and fake prize notifications, are being shared by authorities to help consumers protect themselves.

  • Scammers posing as bank officials ask for login details
  • Fake lottery and competition winnings are often promised in exchange for personal data or fees
  • Investors warned about suspicious investment opportunities

A number of scams have been reported targeting UK consumers, prompting authorities to issue warnings. According to Action Fraud, these include scammers posing as bank officials asking for login details, fake lottery and competition winnings promised in exchange for personal data or fees, and suspicious investment opportunities.

One scam involves individuals claiming to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) demanding payment for outstanding taxes via prepaid debit cards. Another targets investors with promises of unusually high returns on investments that are often unregistered with regulatory bodies such as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

The National Trading Standards Estate Agency Team has also reported a scam where victims are tricked into paying for fake property viewings or bogus estate agent fees.

Consumers are advised to remain cautious and verify any suspicious activity before taking further action. This includes being wary of unsolicited calls or texts asking for financial information, personal details, or payment.

Why this matters: These scams have the potential to cause significant financial loss for UK consumers, making it essential to be aware of these tactics.

What this means for you: This story may affect household budgets, bills, savings, benefits or financial planning depending on your circumstances. Check whether the change applies to you before making financial decisions.
