Bethell fit for England's Australia tour; four uncapped players called up

Jacob Bethell is cleared to return for England's white-ball tour of Australia after knee surgery, while four uncapped players join the T20 squad.

  • Jacob Bethell is fit for England's eight-match white-ball tour of Australia in November.
  • Eddie Jack, Thomas Rew, James Coles, and Henry Crocombe receive their first international call-ups for the T20 leg.
  • Jofra Archer returns to the ODI squad, and Phil Salt and Sam Curran are also fit for the tour.

England has received a significant injury boost ahead of their white-ball tour of Australia, with Jacob Bethell declared fit to return after undergoing knee surgery. Bethell, who missed the latter part of the English summer, including the Test series against Pakistan, is cleared for action in the eight-match itinerary scheduled for November.

The tour will also see four uncapped players join the T20 squad. Hampshire seamer Eddie Jack and 18-year-old Somerset batter Thomas Rew have earned their first full international call-ups. They are joined by Sussex all-rounder James Coles and Surrey-bound quick Henry Crocombe, who also features in the ODI squad.

Jofra Archer is included in the 16-strong one-day international (ODI) squad after being rested for the tri-series in Pakistan. Phil Salt and Sam Curran are also fit to return from injury, though Jos Buttler will be absent following hamstring surgery this week.

Selector Marcus North stated that the returns of Bethell and Archer for the ODI series mean England will be "close to full strength" as they prepare for a World Cup in a year's time. Four quick bowlers, including Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, and Josh Tongue, will depart after the three-game ODI series to prepare for the Test tour of South Africa in December.

Why this matters: The returns of key players and the inclusion of new talent could strengthen England's white-ball squads as they prepare for future international competitions, including a World Cup in a year's time.
