Bezos-backed consortium buys a third of Liverpool FC

Fenway Sports Group has agreed to sell approximately one-third of Liverpool FC to a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, valuing the club at over £5bn.

  • Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has agreed to sell a strategic minority investment in Liverpool FC to 1892 Holdings.
  • The consortium includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and is led by Amit Bhatia.
  • The deal values Liverpool FC between £5bn and £6bn, with FSG retaining majority ownership and operational control.

Liverpool FC's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have confirmed a definitive agreement to sell around a third of the club to a consortium known as 1892 Holdings. The deal involves billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, with British-Indian millionaire businessman Amit Bhatia leading the group.

The transaction values the Premier League club between £5bn and £6bn. FSG will maintain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool. Amit Bhatia is set to become Liverpool's vice-chairman and will join an expanded board, pending regulatory approval.

Bryan Baum, founder of K5 Sports, through which Bezos is investing, will also join the Anfield board, alongside Saverin's wife Elaine. Bezos, the fourth-richest person globally, will not join the board himself. This marks his first investment in sports ownership.

The investment is not expected to impact the club's approach to the transfer window, and there is no new or separate transfer budget associated with it. FSG stated the deal supports Liverpool's long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from global business, technology, and investment.

Why this matters: The deal represents a significant valuation increase for Liverpool FC since FSG purchased the club for £300m in 2010, and brings high-profile investors into the club's ownership structure.
