Despite a landmark 2025 that saw his fifth album, "Highway Prayers," win a third Grammy and top the US album sales chart, Strings' mother died of an overdose during this period of success. Her death is reflected throughout "So Much for Goodbyes," influencing its title, cover art, and songs.
The album includes tracks like "Lay Me Down" and "I'm One of Those," which reinterpret country tropes in the context of generational trauma and distress. A starkly recorded song, "Still I Crash," directly addresses his mother, appearing later in the album and casting a shadow over the remaining tracks.
Strings' guitar playing is highlighted, as is his backing quartet's ability to create a propulsive sound without a drummer. The album also showcases his diverse musical tastes, from traditional bluegrass sounds to hints of heavy metal and heartlands rock.
