Students aspiring to careers in journalism and broadcasting could be taught within the BBC's new Midlands headquarters in Digbeth, following a 10-year agreement with Birmingham City University (BCU).
The partnership aims to provide students with access to BBC-standard studios, workshops, and teaching spaces, along with opportunities to learn from industry professionals. BCU intends to base these facilities at the broadcaster's new Tea Factory headquarters, subject to planning and landlord approval.
Courses in journalism, media, production, and broadcast technology are among those anticipated to use the new facilities. Students would also have access to workshops, lectures, masterclasses, and opportunities to shadow BBC staff. BCU stated that the initiative is designed to help students gain practical experience and enhance their employment prospects after graduation.
The Tea Factory, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2027, will serve as the BBC's new home in the Midlands. The university plans to create various teaching spaces within the building, including studios, workshops, and breakout areas. These facilities are also expected to host training and skills programmes for BBC staff.
