Birmingham New Street station is scheduled to close for five days over the Christmas period, from 24 to 28 December. This closure will prevent trains from running to and from the station, affecting local, regional, and long-distance journeys.
The station is undergoing a £13m upgrade to its overhead power lines, which are essential for electric trains. Network Rail stated that much of the existing equipment dates back to the 1960s and requires replacement to improve long-term service reliability.
While no National Rail services operate on Christmas Day, and reduced services are common around Christmas and New Year, Birmingham New Street will not operate any services during the five-day period. Trains are expected to resume on Tuesday, 29 December.
The station building itself will remain open during the engineering works, allowing access to the Grand Central shopping floor and the Bullring shopping centre. Further upgrade work is anticipated at Birmingham New Street during the Christmas periods in 2027 and 2028.
