Bluesky says day-long outage was caused by DDoS attack

Bluesky has confirmed that its recent day-long disruption was caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. The company says it has upgraded its defences and continues to monitor the situation.

  • Bluesky confirmed the outage was caused by a DDoS attack over the previous 24 hours.
  • The company said it has upgraded its defences in response.
  • Security researchers report that Iran-backed attackers have claimed responsibility, though this is not confirmed by Bluesky.

Social networking site Bluesky has said its recent day-long disruption was caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that flooded the site with junk traffic. The company confirmed the incident in a post on Monday, stating the attack had taken place over the previous 24 hours.

In the post, Bluesky said: “We have upgraded our defenses in response, and we continue to monitor the situation,” without disclosing further details. A spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about the attack.

Security researchers discussing the attacks in the IFIN public forum report that Iran-backed attackers have claimed responsibility. Iran has increased its attacks on U.S. businesses and critical infrastructure since the start of the U.S. and Israel-led war earlier this year.

This is the latest large-scale DDoS attack to affect the site in recent months. In April, Bluesky was hit by a prolonged series of outages caused by a similar flood of web traffic. It is unclear if the attacks are linked.

Why this matters: The attack highlights ongoing cybersecurity threats to major social platforms, with potential implications for user trust and service reliability.

What this means for you: Bluesky users may experience further disruptions if additional attacks occur, though the company says it has upgraded its defences.
