The operator of a boat that capsized near the Statue of Liberty, leading to the deaths of a woman and a five-month-old baby, has been arrested. New York police stated the operator has been charged with reckless endangerment.
The incident occurred near New York Harbour on Saturday night, prompting a large search and rescue operation. Officials confirmed that twelve individuals were rescued from the water.
The US Coast Guard reported that the rescue effort involved two Coast Guard boats, four fire department boats, two police boats, and a police helicopter. Coast Guard investigators are also looking into whether the boat was illegally chartered. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, officials said.
