Captain charged after two deaths in New York boat capsizing

A boat captain has been charged with reckless endangerment following the deaths of a woman and a baby in New York Harbor.

Manuel Hernandez, 46, has been charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment after a boat capsized in New York Harbor on Saturday evening. The incident resulted in the deaths of a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old girl, a New York police department spokesperson told the Guardian.

Police responded to a 911 call at approximately 10:25 pm on Saturday, August 8, 2026, deploying a helicopter unit and divers to the scene near Liberty Island. The woman and baby were found in the water and transported to NYU Langone hospital in Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead.

A dozen other individuals were rescued from the vessel before police arrived and were subsequently taken to hospitals.
