Chelsea chair Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter are reportedly considering selling their shares in the club to majority owners Clearlake Capital. This potential deal could grant the private equity company complete control at Stamford Bridge.
Clearlake Capital currently holds over 60% of Chelsea, but an unusual arrangement from the 2022 takeover means operational control is shared with a consortium led by Boehly. Boehly, Walter, and Hansjörg Wyss each own approximately 13% of the club.
Reports suggest that discussions over a potential deal, which could value the club at more than £5bn, have resumed in recent weeks. Walter is reportedly seeking to raise funds to pay off insurers following a US federal investigation into alleged tax fraud.
If Boehly and Walter proceed with the sale, Clearlake would hold more than 86% of Chelsea's shares, giving them effective control, including over plans for a new stadium at Stamford Bridge. An external sale is considered unlikely due to terms of the original purchase agreement, which require partner consent for third-party sales.
