  • The potential sale could value Chelsea at £5.5bn, years after a consortium bought the club for £4.25bn.
  • Clearlake Capital already owns nearly two-thirds of the Premier League club.

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter could cease to be co-owners of Premier League club Chelsea as they engage in talks to sell their stakes to Clearlake Capital. This potential move could value the club at £5.5bn.

A Boehly-fronted consortium acquired Chelsea for £4.25bn, including promised funds for stadium developments, from Roman Abramovich just years ago. Clearlake Capital already holds nearly two-thirds of the club.

Professor Kieran Maguire told City AM that a sale makes sense for Boehly and Walter, as Behdad Eghbali has taken over operational control, marginalising Boehly's position. Professor Rob Wilson also told City AM that this potential sale could settle a power struggle and leave Clearlake unquestionably in control.

Why this matters: If the sale proceeds, it would consolidate control of Chelsea under Clearlake Capital, potentially bringing greater clarity to the club's leadership.
