A bomb disposal team has carried out a controlled explosion of an artillery shell found on Maryport's South Shore. The device was detonated on Monday after being discovered on Sunday.
Maryport and Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue teams assisted the explosive ordnance unit. A safety cordon was put in place ahead of the detonation.
This incident follows a series of ordnance finds along Cumbria's west coast in the past year. In the last month alone, eight suspected explosive items were found on Drigg beach.
On Sunday, teams were also called to Silloth regarding another suspected washed-up ordnance. However, Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team confirmed this was a large gas canister, which has been prepared for council collection.
