A British man has pleaded guilty to causing the death of his two-year-old son, who fell from a hotel window in Cyprus. The father, from Essex, admitted a charge of causing death through a reckless, rash or dangerous act at a court in Paphos on Tuesday, 22 September 2026.
The boy fell from the fourth floor of the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas on 12 July. The Paphos district court was informed in July that the boy fell through an open window while his father was holding him around his waist and swinging him.
The man's lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, stated that his client decided to plead guilty to avoid a lengthy trial and to spare his family from reliving the child's death in court. Mr Alexandrou also said he would ask the court to lift travel restrictions, allowing his client to return to the UK to be with his wife and daughter until the next hearing.
A further hearing is set for 5 October, during which the prosecutor will present the facts of the case and the defence will offer mitigation. The maximum sentence for the charge is four years in prison, though Mr Alexandrou indicated that previous cases where defendants received fines or suspended sentences should be considered.
