Assault charges against Ahmed al Ahmed, who was hailed a hero for disarming one of the Bondi Beach shooters, have been dropped by police. Mr Ahmed was charged in June with domestic violence common assault, as well as stalking and intimidation, following an alleged incident with his father in March at a home in southwest Sydney.
On Wednesday, prosecutors withdrew the charges in a local Sydney court. This followed an agreement that Mr Ahmed would abide by an apprehended domestic violence order for 12 months, which limits his contact with his father. Defence lawyer Mohamed Sakr stated in court that the order, prohibiting Mr Ahmed from assaulting, threatening, stalking, or intimidating his father, was accepted without admissions.
Mr Ahmed, 44, told reporters outside the court that he was a "free man" and hoped for "peace". He gained global attention last year after footage showed him tackling one of two gunmen during a Jewish event at Sydney's Bondi Beach, an attack that killed 15 people.
